About Me

Dear Reader,

Welcome to My Destiny Lies Before Me. Thank you for visiting. This blog is…. well I am not quite sure what it is yet or what it will become. Is it a journal? Or perhaps a way of reviewing the latest books, articles or diets? And, of course I want the blog to be fun!!

It is fifty eight months since I was given a diagnosis of inoperable metastatic adenocarcinoma of the small bowel with a prognosis of 12 months.  Rare as hens teeth – there is no body of medical literature to direct my treatment. The tumour did show similarity to colorectal cancer so I was given chemotherapy best suited to the large bowel. I was treated really well and the lumps duly shrunk. Then came the difficult bit: “Watch and Wait” the NHS said after finishing eight cycles of chemotherapy. I prefer a more active approach – always have. After finishing chemotherapy I read many books. Reading, reading, searching and trawling through the immense internet and medical literature became an all-absorbing task. It became apparent to me that there is a massive literature on alternative treatments for cancer. The alternative press does not always have pure evidence based medicine at its disposal, often relying on smaller studies and anecdotal reports. I am now waiting running into trouble from medical complications – portal hypertension from the chemo, chemotherapy induced neuropathy and now a rare complication of radiotherapy – enteritis and refractory gastrointestinal  bleeding.

These four books I found truly inspirational:

Surviving “Terminal” Cancer: Clinical Trials, Drug Cocktails, and Other Treatments Your Oncologist Won’t Tell You About – Ben Williams PhD

Radical Remission: Surviving Cancer against all Odds – Kelly  Turner

Beyond the Magic Bullet, the Anti-Cancer Cocktail: A New Approach to Beating Cancer – Raymond Chang

Getting Well Again – O. Carl Simonton

A little bit about me: I am 54 and a doctor. I qualified in 1991 from Oxford University. I was a General Practitioner until I took medical retirement. I am not  currently licensed to practise but I have been trained in the scientific research method. I am a Husband and a Dad. I live in Bristol UK. I love God, my wife, my daughters, my family and friends. I love hill walking, cinema, reading science fiction and fantasy, beach life, Doc Martens, cooking. Also Marvel – particularly the Silver Surfer, Dr. Strange and Iron Man.

So let’s see! Who knows – anything could happen in the next half hour!
